Wiki Lesson

"Wiki Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser."

Directions: Students will complete a series of steps to complete a lesson on a cultural wiki that incorporates IB criteria. Each student will be assigned a country to maintain. They will edit other countries and continue to make sure their country's wiki is accurate, grammar free and without bias. They will adhere to certain parameters in order to keep this assignment fun, interesting, educational and safe.

Guiding Question: What responsibilities do we have as a citizen to manage the information we share?

  • Ms. Clementi's Wiki: Students will maintain their wiki on this site.
  • Students will take a pre-test about wikis prior to the unit.
  • Students will take an online quiz to see how well they understand different cultures.
  • Students will determine the difference between bias and facts by completing a scavenger hunt about a culture.
  • Students will draw a country from a hat.
  • Students will complete a comparison worksheet between Wikipedia and Culture Grams, Country Reports or Kwintessential pertaining to the country they are representing.
  • Students will maintain a process journal that allows them to reflect on what they are learning.
  • Students will maintain a document that states changes they make to other countries.
  • Students will also maintain a document that discusses the changes others made to their wiki and how they resolved those changes.
  • Students that edited other student wikis will check to see if the student's wiki they changed has properly maintained their wiki.
  • Students will continue to maintain the reliability of their wiki by removing fiction. They are also responsible for making sure there are no grammatical or spelling errors.
  • Their final project will involve either the revision of the "About" section of Wikipedia so that it is user friendly for a younger audience, write a pro/con list for using Wikipedia or write a letter to a grandparent or parent addressing the responsibilities we have as a citizen to manage the information we share.
