"Wiki
Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely
create and edit Web page content using any Web browser."
Directions:
Students will complete a series of steps to complete a lesson
on a cultural wiki that incorporates IB criteria. Each student
will be assigned a country to maintain. They will edit other
countries and continue to make sure their country's wiki is
accurate, grammar free and without bias. They will adhere to
certain parameters in order to keep this assignment fun, interesting,
educational and safe.
Guiding
Question: What responsibilities do we have as a citizen
to manage the information we share?
- Ms.
Clementi's Wiki: Students will maintain their wiki on
this site.
- Students
will take a pre-test about wikis prior to the unit.
- Students
will take an online quiz
to see how well they understand different cultures.
- Students
will determine the difference between bias and facts by completing
a scavenger hunt about a culture.
- Students
will draw a country from a hat.
- Students
will complete a comparison worksheet between Wikipedia and
Culture Grams, Country
Reports or Kwintessential
pertaining to the country they are representing.
- Students
will maintain a process journal that allows them to reflect
on what they are learning.
- Students
will maintain a document that states changes they make to
other countries.
- Students
will also maintain a document that discusses the changes others
made to their wiki and how they resolved those changes.
- Students
that edited other student wikis will check to see if the student's
wiki they changed has properly maintained their wiki.
- Students
will continue to maintain the reliability of their wiki by
removing fiction. They are also responsible for making sure
there are no grammatical or spelling errors.
- Their
final project will involve either the revision of the "About"
section of Wikipedia so that it is user friendly for a younger
audience, write a pro/con list for using Wikipedia or write
a letter to a grandparent or parent addressing the responsibilities
we have as a citizen to manage the information we share.
