Bolivia:
Photo taken in La Paz, Bolivia by Terry Rosengart. College
students primarily make up this community because of its
proximity to the local college and it is relatively inexpensive
to live in this community.Bolivia is a country of vast wealth
and resources. It is one of the wealthier nations in South
America because they are major producers of gold and tin. Some
of Bolivia's agriculture products include soybeans, coca,
coffee, potatoes and timber. Mining, petroleum, clothing and
tobacco are some of their industries. They
also export zinc and silver. There is conflict with Columbia
because drug lords are conducting business in the bordering
villages. Because they are bordering nations, it is easy for
them to cross over and conduct business with Bolivia's drug
lords. This is a huge problem because locals feel threatened and
vulnerable because of poor law enforcement and corruption in the
area. The Bolivian government is asking for international
assistance to eradicate drug activity.
The religion in Bolivia is
primarily Roman Catholic. Eighty five percent of the country is
Roman Catholic, while the remainder of the country is 15%
Protestant. Bolivia's
proximity to the ocean provides them a rich diet of fish. Most
Bolivians prefer fish to pork or beef because it is more
affordable and they are being heavily influenced by the recent
campaign by the government to make healthier choices.
As far as culture is concerned, if you
want to please your host at dinner, bring them yellow or purple
flowers. They associate those colors with good luck and
prosperity. When dining with Bolivians, you might feel uneasy
because they are a very loud culture. |
