Ecuador:
Photo taken by Ginny Hebert in Alhambra Ecuador. This photo is
Fort Hidalgo, a Fort established in the 1800s.
Ecuador gets its name from being along the
equator. Because it is along the equator, it is difficult to
find a cool place to escape warmer temperatures. Ecuador grows
enough bananas in the coastal plain to make it the world's
largest exporter of this fruit. Ecuador, being one of the
smaller countries in South America, is slightly larger than
Nevada. Ecuador has frequent earthquakes, landslides, floods,
periodic droughts and volcanic activity. Villarrica in the
Andes, is the highest active volcano in Ecuador.
Quito, the capital city, was named after
the early inhabitants known as the Quitu people. By the time the
Spanish arrived in Ecuador in 1502, Quito was a major Inca city.
Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador, razed the city
shortly after their arrival, leaving no Inca remains. Ecuador
declared its independence from Spain in 1805.
When invited to dinner, Ecuadorians
enjoy flowers. A bouquet of roses is appreciated. They also
enjoy lilies and marigolds. If you give scissors or knives as a
gift, the host will think you want to sever the relationship. Be
sure to arrive on time and dress casually. They do tend to lack
proper eating habits, so be prepared. |
